An insightful look at passion and fidelity set at sea with Gabin masterfully playing a tugboat captain. He carries on with Morgan after rescuing her from the stormy waters, but soon learns that his wife is near death. He stays at his wife's bedside until she dies, believing that he was
eternally faithful to her. Released in Paris in 1941, the picture was begun in 1939, but, because of Gremillon's insistence on documentary storm footage and the restrictions of the Nazi Occupation, production had to be held up. The film was eventually completed in the studio, with Gremillon
getting only a few of the realistic scenes he had wanted. (In French; English subtitles.)
