This feature debut from British writer-director-composer Mike Figgis is a tautly constructed, deftly executed crime thriller. The action is set in Newcastle, England, an economically depressed city desperate for jobs. American business magnate-gangster, Cosmo (Tommy Lee Jones), is launching an ambitious money-laundering scheme by buying up lots of real estate. One man refuses all of Jones's lucrative offers: Finney (Sting), the owner of a successful jazz club. Caught up in the conflict are Kate (Melanie Griffith), an American who has worked for Cosmo as a call girl, and Brendan (Sean Bean), a young jazz enthusiast. When two thugs from London are hired to "persuade" Finney to sell his club, he turns the tables and sends the head assassin back to London with a broken arm. But Cosmo escalates the violence. STORMY MONDAY draws its strength from subtle shadings of character and a vivid evocation of its setting, Newcastle. The little violent action there is takes place either very quickly or offscreen. Figgis's moody realization of the screenplay is quietly effective and brimming with visual nuance and irony--particularly in its perceptive take on the contradictions of the global economy. leave a comment
