When Deputy Jason (Adam Beach) informs the guests at a Colorado motel that, due to a snowstorm, the local roads are blocked, it's bad news for all concerned. The proprietors, Fritz (Jurgen Prochnow) and Margie (P. Lynn Johnson), may be forced into bankruptcy; trucker Tim (William S. Taylor) has a big-rig load to deliver on schedule; two redneck brothers have cabin fever; and lewd Carl (Winston Rekert) wants to dally with his dolly in the tropics. When two bodies pop up like corpse-sicles in the snow, Jason deduces that they're connected to a recent bank heist in nearby Vail. The question is whether they're frozen felons or victims of an ongoing crime spree; in which case, the snowbound culprits may be holed up at Margie and Fritz's establishment. After Margie's autistic nephew Leslie (Damon Johnson) stumbles upon the stolen loot, greed gets the best of the stranded travelers, leaving it to Jason to sort out the guilty parties before the killers strike again. Muffled echoes of WHEN YOU COMIN BACK, RED RYDER? and THE DESPERATE HOURS reverberate throughout this dour thriller, which deserves credit for making the viewer feel trapped inside that dingy motel diner; trapped and bored senseless, that is! Faced with stereotyped characters, dreary dialogue, a mystery that's embarrassingly easy to second-guess, and all that snow, is it any wonder that the cast delivers frost-bitten performances? leave a comment --Robert Pardi
