This filmed stage play successfully captures what the theatrical version had to offer, but lacks the spark provided by original stars Anthony Newley and Anna Quayle. Set in a circus ring (a heavy-handed symbol of the world), the story follows the rise to fame of Littlechap Tanner until he finally gets to the top. When he gets there, he realises he has succeeded at the expense of everyone around him. The film was remade in 1979 as SAMMY STOPS THE WORLD. An Oscar nomination went to Ham for his musical score. Song include "I Believed It All," "The New York Scene"(Al Ham; performed by the Al Ham Orchestra), "ABC Song," "I Wanna Be Rich," "Gonna Build A Mountain," "Mumbo, Jumbo," "Once In A Lifetime," "What Kind of Fool Am I?"(Anthony Newley, Leslie Bricusse; sung by Tony Tanner), "Glorious Russian," "Typically Japanese," "All American"(Newley, Bricusse; sung by Millicent Martin),"Typically English," "Lumbered," "Malinki Meilchick," "Family Fugue," "Nag, Nag, Nag," "Someone Nice Like You"(Newley, Bricusse; sung by Tanner, Martin). leave a comment
