Consider the Three Stooges. These rough-house comedians (Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and alternately Curly Howard, Shemp Howard, Joe Besser, and Curly-Joe De Rita) made close to 200 shorts between 1934 and 1958, as well as appearing in a few feature films and later inspiring a television cartoon series. But the team's 1980s cult following was nothing short of phenomenal. It was inevitable that some filmmaker would try to cash in on the craze, and that's exactly what STOOGEMANIA attempts to do. Howard (Josh Mostel, son of the late Zero) is a self-admitted Stooge freak. This obsession gets Howard fired from his job and in trouble with his fiancee's (Melanie Chartoff) parents. In hopes of breaking his Stoogemania, Howard goes to Dr. Fixyer Minder (Sid Caesar), who specializes in such cases. But eventually Howard ends up on "Stooge Row," a ghetto inhabited largely by die-hard Stooge freaks. Criticizing STOOGEMANIA for its low-brow humor would be, to say the least, a foolish notion. This is the very element that made the team so popular, and while certainly not for every taste, it's what Stooge fans crave. leave a comment
