Burt Reynolds should have had a stick taken to him when he agreed to direct and star in this adaptation of the Elmore Leonard best-seller. Stick (Reynolds) is coming back to Florida after having spent seven years in a Michigan jail for armed robbery. He arrives in Miami, and Rainy (Jose Perez), an old pal, is immediately killed, thus giving Stick his motivation for the rest of the movie--revenge. His investigation gets him involved in a few minor drug deals as he tries to gain the confidence of the minor bad guys so he can find out who the big cheese is. When a contract is put out on him, Stick is sought by gangland kingpin Nestor (Castulo Guerra), albino Moke (Dar Robinson), and chubby Chucky (Charles Durning). Along the way, Stick finds a girl friend (Candice Bergen) and a long-lost daughter (Tricia Leigh Fisher). Neither one matters in the scheme of this convoluted story, which has the remarkable ability of allowing a viewer to doze off for 15 minutes and not feel as though anything has been missed. The picture is dull and the pacing abrupt rather than quick. STICK might have been a good movie about 20 years ago, before people became sophisticated and demanded depth in characterization. leave a comment
