An abstract film version of Hermann Hesse's abstract novel, which has a cult following among the college crowd. The movie, however, has been less well received simply because the images chosen don't match Hesse's visual descriptions. While the film is nearly plotless, it does concern von Sydow's attempt to find a new meaning to life before reaching the age of 50, at which time he plans to commit suicide. There's an excessive use of video images, as well as surrealist paintings by Mati Klarwein, to illustrate the journey that von Sydow undertakes. Distributed independently on a four-wall basis by electronics magnate Peter J. Sprague. leave a comment
