Steaming: Review
The final film for both director Joseph Losey and star Diana Dors, each of whom died shortly after its completion in 1984, STEAMING is the cinematic version of the critically acclaimed Nell Dunn play. Taking place entirely in a Turkish bath in South London, the movie is an interplay among women who meet in a group on regular occasions to discuss their lives and loves, blowing off steam as they sit amid a roomful of it. Nancy (Vanessa Redgrave), a friend of the unmarried upper-class Sarah (Sarah Miles), is soon telling the others about her failed marriage and the three children she was left to raise. Josie (Patti Love), the most forward and promiscuous of the group, revels in blabbering on about her sex life, while the proper Mrs. Meadows (Brenda Bruce) and her heavyset daughter, Dawn (Felicity Dean), are more reserved. In the meantime Violet (Dors), the owner of the baths, is lamenting over the city council's threat to close her establishment. Over time their friendships grow, each of them learning as much about themselves as they do about the others, revealing--in the film's final scene--an equal dose of skin and emotion. While the performances are all top-notch, STEAMING never really breaks open, remaining instead within the boundaries created by the stage play.
