STEALING AMERICA: VOTE BY VOTE

While much of the material in this straightforward documentary from Dorothy Fadiman has been already covered in films like HBO's Hacking Democracy and Ian Inaba's AMERICAN BLACKOUT, the issue of "election anomalies" (read: voter fraud) certainly deserves all the attention it can get. Fadiman's 90-minute film makes a compelling case for reexamining the legitimacy of the 2004 Presidential election, and cites compelling evidence of systematic voter suppression, electronic voting machine manipulation and stonewalling of investigations into suspected abuses. The ever-widening gulf between once-accurate exit polls and the actual voter tallies is the most glaring red flag: Early in the evening of November 2, 2006, exit polls showed that Senator John Kerry was actually ahead of President George W. Bush in 10 of the 12 key "battleground states," but once the votes were counted, the final tallies showed all but five of those swing states going to Bush. So what's happening? Fadiman and her interviewees, who include journalists, political watchdogs, and election officials and volunteers, cite uncounted votes, the shockingly low number of functioning voting machines in districts where African Americans and liberal college students would be casting their ballots and instances of "purging" in which voters -- many of them African American soldiers who were serving overseas -- were removed from the voter rolls. But suspicious 11th-hour shifts of votes away from Kerry could also be a result of the new electronic, touch-screen voting machines. Like Hacking DemocracyThe Daily Show and The Colbert Report to illustrate several salient points may reveal a lack of imagination, resources or both, it also means her material is not as dry as it might have otherwise been. leave a comment --Ken Fox
