STEAL BIG, STEAL LITTLE

This ponderous epic comedy from director Andrew Davis (THE FUGITIVE) is as schizophrenic as its central conceit -- a pair of twins, one earthy and virtuous, one greedy and slick, both played by Andy Garcia. STEAL BIG, STEAL LITTLE starts off as a sentimental study of ethnic identity and assimilation among Mexican-Americans in Southern California, veers suddenly into caper-comedy territory and wraps up (none too soon) with an action set piece involving a hot-air balloon. Overblown and awkwardly plotted, the film comes to life only when Alan Arkin turns up as a cynical used-car dealer on the lam. For the talented Garcia, who handles the double role with aplomb, it's another career misstep. leave a comment
