There's no question of the sincere intent of this mawkish little film. Certainly, it means well and aspires to a universal message, but given its simplistic characterizations, this story of a small-town family undergoing radical change is more akin to a TV sitcom and might better be titled "Not So Happy Days for My Three Sons." The McDermotts--father Jake (Jim Haynie, COUNTRY), mother Eileen (Melinda Dillon, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS), and their three sons operate a fried chicken business that the boys expect to one day inherit. Brian (Tim Quill), the oldest of the boys, is having an affair with a mayoral candidate (Stockard Channing); too-good-to-be-true middle brother Kit (Dermont Mulroney) is in love with a beautiful bimbo (Daphne Zuniga) who is engaged to a building contractor; and kid brother Duncan (Sean Astin, GOONIES) is a smart aleck whose main preoccupations are booze and how to bed a sexy, older waitress (Dinah Manoff). Life for the boys is relatively predictable until Jake sells the restaurant and, seemingly, the boy's future, then dies of a heart attack. No doubt first-time screenwriter Monte Merrick hoped to use the sale of the family restaurant as a metaphor for the passing of old values, but under Lee Grant's direction, Merrick's characters become caricatures framed in unlikely situations. leave a comment
