Stardust Memories

1980, Movie, PG, 90 mins

After flirting with autobiography in a few films, Woody Allen dug directly into personal experience to fashion this tale. Allen plays a prominent comedian-turned-film-director who attends a weekend film seminar where he is surrounded by hordes of adoring critics and fans who mine his every word looking for profundity and hidden meanings. The usual Allen neuroses and problems with women are given an episodic treatment, with a number of jokes along the way, but the film has an underlying angry tone that Allen fails to blend successfully with the comedy. Allen is to be commended for broadening the psychology and themes of his films, but STARDUST MEMORIES remains a disappointing outing, despite its many laughs and inside jokes. (The head of United Artists, Andy Albeck, plays a film chief who is worried that his new movie has no laughs.) leave a comment
