Marvelously constructed by director William Wellman, who elicited superb performances from Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, the first Star is in some ways, the best. It perfectly captures the hustle of Hollywood, and the scenes in which Gaynor is being physically (and painfully) prepared for stardom by having her perfectly acceptable face redone by cosmetic experts, facial experts, eyebrow experts, hair stylists, and makeup magicians are a lot colder that the 1954 Judy Garland remake. They're also a lot more relevant to today's Botox-obsessed glamor culture. Read the complete review for A Star Is Born
