Standing Room Only: Review
Another madcap comedy which plays on the then-popular joke of overcrowding in Washington, D.C., during WW II (1943's THE MORE THE MERRIER being the most successful). MacMurray is a young executive who travels to the nation's capital in representation of Arnold's midwest toy manufacturing plant, hoping to secure a war production contract. With secretary Goddard in tow, he soon discovers that lodging is an impossibility. Goddard comes up with the ingenious idea of working as servants in the posh home of Young in order to secure a place to stay. When it comes to MacMurray actually working as a servant, all confusion breaks loose. Not only does he teeter on the brink of disaster, he finds that all the dinner guests are Washington big-wigs, one of whom is the official in charge of war production contracts. A fast-paced comedy which is sure to hold interest, as well as evoke a few belly laughs. 1944 was a fine year for MacMurray and showed his versatility as an actor. STANDING ROOM ONLY was a fine comic performance, AND THE ANGELS SING displayed his musical talents (he began his career as a saxophone player), and the classic DOUBLE INDEMNITY allowed him to show off his powerful dramatic capability.
