Using the familiar positions of the square dance as its central metaphor, this coming-of-age story is sincere but unexceptional. Gemma Dillard (Winona Ryder), a God-fearing 13-year-old, lives with her crotchety grandfather (Jason Robards, Jr.) in Twilight, Texas. Her life is turned upside down when her absent mother, Juanelle (Jane Alexander), returns one morning and wants to take Gemma back with her to Ft. Worth. Once there, Gemma falls into a kind of puppy-love with mentally retarded Rory (Rob Lowe). SQUARE DANCE is a slow-moving slice-of-life affair with the idea of leaving home and returning at its heart. The performances are generally good, with Ryder very convincing as the young girl whose summer is filled with changes. And Lowe proves he is more than just a pretty face. leave a comment
