They Made Her A Spy

1939, Movie, NR, 69 mins

starstarstarstar
A patriotic espionage tale about a pretty young woman, Eilers, who joins the US Army Intelligence Corps in order to avenge the death of her brother. With the help of cub reporter Lane, she uncovers clues that lead to a spy ring supposedly headed by Leiber, but actually by Richards. A climactic chase ends up atop the Washington Monument, where Leiber is wounded and Richards jumps to his death. Not quite as patriotic as the spy chase atop the Statue of Liberty in Hitchcock's SABOTEUR (1942), but it'll do. Although some sources credit Garson Kanin with the screenplay, it was his brother Michael who penned it. leave a comment
