James Bond (Moore) teams with a beautiful Russian secret agent, Maj. Anya Amasova (Bach), to stop the Captain Nemo-esque Karl Stromberg (Jurgens) from using two stolen nuclear-armed submarines to destroy life on the Earth's surface so he can create an undersea kingdom. Stromberg dispatches 7-foot-2-inch, steel-toothed Jaws (Kiel) to take Bond out of the picture, and 007 leads the indestructible behemoth on a globe-trotting chase.

As the Bond series moved deeper into the 1970s, the emphasis moved away from the inventive scripts that made the best Sean Connery films fine examples of the spy genre and toward the kind of feats of daring and visual spectacle that abound in THE SPY WHO LOVED ME. Take for example Bond's daring jump off a 90-foot cliff, a feat that ski jumper Rick Sylvester was paid $30,000 to accomplish and which took 10 days to shoot. The largest studio set to date was also built to house the submarines and for Stromberg's menacing headquarters, and shooting was done in Egypt, Sardinia, Malta, Scotland, Okinawa, Switzerland, and Nassau. leave a comment
