Multitalented Rusty Cundieff's bawdy romantic comedy gets off to a boisterously entertaining beginning, but bogs down in twists that aren't twisty enough and romance that isn't romantic enough. Clyde (Joe Torry), a smooth operator with a serious collection of Bobby Brown suits, has more booty-getting tricks up his glittering sleeve than you can shake a stick at. His photographer friend Montel (Cundieff) is a sensitive guy who "does not have a rap" with which to slay the ladies. Together they attend a boisterous bash in a borrowed Porsche and meet flamboyant gold digger Adina (Paula Jai Parker) and her shy friend Brandy (Tisha Campbell). Clyde reels in Adina like a prize-winning tuna (stranding Montel in the process), but loses her the minute she realizes he's not the catch he pretends to be. Montel, meanwhile, is forced to ask Brandy for a ride home. Predictably enough, they fight like cats and dogs but later realize they're meant for each other. When their nasty friends find out, they team up to break up the blissful couple. Cundieff is at his best with the raunchy stuff, the crass extraction of a laugh via gimmicks like the materialistic Adina's TERMINATOR once-over of men. His comic agility never negotiates the great leap into either side-splitting hilarity or the soulful sweetness of LOVE JONES, but this is no B*A*P*S, for which we should be grateful. leave a comment
