The Spongebob Squarepants Movie: Review
If you know the answer to the question "Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?", this is your movie: a feature-length version of the double entendre-filled cartoon series that's as popular with adults as tiny tots. It isn't as consistently funny as some of the 11-minute TV episodes, but fans should be sufficiently absorbed that they'll be able to ignore the fact that it's a little waterlogged. The rowdy and rambunctious opener, filled with live-action pirates who take their SpongeBob very seriously, kicks off the animated story, which takes place in undersea Bikini Bottom. Fry-cook SpongeBob (voice of Tom Kenny) dreams of managing the newest location of the Krusty Krab restaurant chain, and as a 374-time best-employee honoree, he thinks he's a shoo-in. Instead, Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown) gives the job to SpongeBob's pessimistic neighbor Squidward (Rodger Bumpass), claiming that man-child SpongeBob is too immature for the position. Devastated, SpongeBob grabs his best pal, Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke), and heads to Goofy Goobers to drown his sorrows in ice cream. Meanwhile, Mr. Krabs' archrival, Plankton (Doug Lawrence), is furious that the Krusty Krab 2 opening is getting TV coverage while his restaurant, the Chum Bucket, has never had so much as a single customer. He resorts to Plan Z, a devious plot to steal the top-secret recipe for the popular Krabby Patty that involves swiping King Neptune's (Jeffrey Tambor) beloved crown and framing Mr. Krabs to take the blame (world domination also figures in). At first everything goes according to Plankton's nefarious plan; ignoring the kind counsel of his daughter, Mindy the Mermaid (Scarlett Johansson), Neptune demands that Mr. Krabs return the royal headgear. Krabs can't comply, since he never had the crown to begin with and anyway, Plankton has fenced it. Good fellow that he is, SpongeBob swallows his disappointment at being passed over at work and offers to help Mr. Krabs. But can a little yellow sea sponge rescue the king's crown and soak up the scum before Plankton turns Bikini Bottom into Planktopolis? Creator/director Stephen Hillenburg keeps the film swimming along and only runs into rough water when certain gags go on far too long. Parents should be forewarned that the film earns its PG rating for some crude humor. But most of the "adult" jokes, along with a self-mocking cameo by David Hasselhoff, will sail right over the heads of small fry.
