The first sound version of the Rex Beach novel which was twice filmed silently--in 1914, with Tom Santschi, William Farnum, and Kathlyn Williams, and in 1923 with Milton Sills, Noah Beery, and Anna Q. Nilsson. This time the story was brought to the screen as a vehicle for Cooper, who was hot off the success of THE VIRGINIAN (1929). The setting is once again an Alaskan boom town, and Cooper is defending his Midas gold mine against the scheming ways of Boyd, who is determined to make the town his own.
