Kevin and Diana (Brian Dennehy and Elizabeth Ashley) are a middle-aged couple whose older son, Danny (Michael O'Keefe), an athlete and a possible Olympian in gymnastics, becomes involved in a cult run by a man called Kirklander (Peter Fonda). The cult is relatively harmless; the kids in the group lead clean, drug-free lives and devote themselves to worthwhile activities. But Kevin and Diana cannot accept that their son has submerged himself in such an organization, and when he won't come home of his own accord, they hire Pratt (James Woods), an expert in deprogramming, to kidnap the boy and get his mind in order. Woods is particularly good as the deprogrammer, conveying an air of moral tackiness that suggests the "cure" may be worse than the perceived disorder. A good enough movie that benefits from Ted Kotcheff's direction, SPLIT IMAGE disappeared quickly from the movie houses, despite good word-of-mouth from the few who got to see it. leave a comment
