Get out your handkerchiefs: This warm 'n' fuzzy drama is bound and determined to have its way with your tear ducts. And thanks to the efforts of its solid cast, it'll be a cold, cold heart that remains untouched. Recently released from prison, young Percy (Alison Elliott) -- who's deeply vulnerable beneath her tough exterior -- lands in tiny, picture-postcard Gilead, ME. She finds both a job and a place to stay at the only eatery in town, the Spitfire Grill. Percy bonds with the grill's crusty proprietor, Hannah (Ellen Burstyn) and coworker Shelby (Marcia Gay Harden), but the townsfolk remain suspicious of the beguiling ex-con, particularly after Percy cooks up a raffle scheme to help the aging Hannah sell off the grill. In the grand tradition of family entertainment, there are lots of lessons to be learned about tolerance and the value of good works. If it all sounds particularly holier-than-thou, there's a reason: The film was financed by Mississippi-based Catholic group the Sacred Heart League, doing business as the innocuous-sounding Gregory Productions. While there's no outright proselytizing in the film, it ought to count for at least one Sunday school credit. leave a comment
