J. Farrell MacDonald plays legendary Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne in everything but name in this standard college football film, released only months after Rockne's tragic death and dedicated to his memory. The slim plot hinges on the conflict that arises between the inspiring coach and Bucky O'Brien (Lew Ayres), a freshman running back who becomes disenchanted when his game role shifts from carrying the ball to blocking for talented teammate Jim Stewart (William Bakewell). After refusing to do his job, Bucky finds himself in the stands when Notre Dame battles Army, but it should come as little surprise that when the chips and the Irish are down, Bucky is back in uniform, a team player at last. Re-creating more Rockne lore, Andy Devine plays the George Gipp-like Truck McCall, a player who is struggling against death in a hospital. A number of real-life former Irish players and coaches also appear as themselves, including Adam Walsh, Bucky O'Connor, Frank Carideo, John Law, and the Four Horsemen--Don Miller, Elmer Layden, Jim Crowley, and Harry Stuhldreher. leave a comment
