Overlong, tedious drama starring Hudson as an atheistic, cynical young doctor who travels into the wilds of Java in 1936 seeking to use the research culled by fabled doctor Ives, who has been in the brush for many years. Hudson's uncaring, self-serving attitude catches up with him when he is faced with a dangerous dilemma at the hands of a witch doctor. The witch doctor has driven alcoholic Abbott insane, forcing Hudson to kill the white man. Fueled by a hatred of the voodoo priest, Hudson vows vengeance and nearly loses his life in the struggle, but he finds a spiritual faith he has never felt before. While the material is potentially interesting, Mulligan's direction is lackadaisical and stiff, allowing Hudson to sleepwalk through the lengthy film. leave a comment
