This sex-on-the-brain thriller that can't be bothered to baffle viewers, instead skipping along the path of audience expectations with scarcely a detour. Stock analyst Lauren Bishop (Kari Wuhrer) can be as tough as any man, but she's having trouble climbing the ladder of success at her firm, Dewinter/Hathaway. Even when she nails the lucrative Pli-Tech account, her chauvinist boss, Harry Burnham (Benjamin King), fires her for making an end run around his strategy. Dewinter/Hathaway CEO Leland Dewinter (George Lazenby) realizes that Burnham made a mistake in firing Lauren and rehires her, but she's still smarting about the company's sexism. Coincidentally, she's in a singles' bar and spots a co-worker she knows slightly, poor-little-rich-boy Clay Harding (Stephen Baldwin), who resents the fact that his father keeps him on a tight financial leash. Clay rescues Lauren from a swinger who's slipped her a date rape drug, but there may be more to the incident than meets the eye: the would-be assailant was hired by Burnham, and Burnham is chummy with Clay. Before you can say "film noir," Lauren is dispensing fiduciary tips to trust-fund-baby Clay, and with the help of her private eye pal, Manny Molka (Michael Gregory), she's able to fake the identity of an out-of-town client so Clay can get into his father's account. Lauren hatches a shell game that will help Clay to grab his inheritance immediately, but Clay has no intention of sharing the wealth — in fact, he's been setting Lauren up to take the fall. Can she outfox Clay before it's too late? Baldwin and Wuhrer have absolutely no on-screen chemistry, so their characters' larcenous game of one-upmanship never has the sexually charged edge that distinguished better femme fatale pictures from the rest of the pack. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
