An Egyptian mystery tale starring Down as a tough female archaeologist who travels to the ancient tombs in search of treasure. Along the way she witnesses the murder of Egyptian Gielgud; and while trying to solve the crime, she is shot at several times, beaten, nearly raped, threatened with a knife, forced to face some rotting corpses, chased by bats, and almost entombed alive. Oh yes, and she falls in love with Egyptologist Langella. Laughable dialog and a dull script ruin what was only a pretty travelog to begin with. SPHINX cost $14 million to produce and grossed a pathetic $800,000. leave a comment
