A cute young couple try to get a handle on their problems in this well-intentioned but not especially engaging drama. Aspiring actor Max (Jason London) is working on a spec script with his pal Doug (Phill Lewis), and not much else. Max's secret passion is sports gambling and he's losing a lot of money he doesn't have — even his bookie (Richmond Arquette) thinks he ought to slow down. When Max's girlfriend Brigette (Charlie Spradling) is stressed, she reaches for a glass of wine... then another and another and another. Max has sworn to Brigette that he's not betting anymore, and when she catches him in the lie, they make a pact: He has to go a month without betting on a single game, and she has to go a month without a drink. Needless to say, neither finds living up to the agreement easy. At the same time, Doug and Max's obnoxious friend Nathan (Erin Beaux) dates a girl with very large nipples; she turns out to have a vague connection to Jack Nicholson, which leads Doug to concoct a far-fetched plan to his and Max's script to the actor. And Max has words with his deeply closeted roommate, Grant (James Parks), with tragic consequences. Lots happens in this handsomely mounted feature debut, written and directed by one-time actor and feature film first-timer Gil Cates Jr. (the son of TV producer/director Gil Cates and cousin of actress Phoebe Cates). But it never really lives up to its ambitious attempt to be a LOST WEEKEND for ambitious young people whose emotional Achilles heels screw up their attempts to live the Los Angeles good life. The main characters are defined by their problems, and the secondary characters (notably Brigette's parents) are so crudely drawn it's hard to imagine what Cates was thinking. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
