Even without Salvador Dali's proposed dream sequence in which Ingrid Bergman emerges from a statue covered with ants, Alfred Hitchcock's blatantly Freudian thriller is still pretty strange stuff. Gregory Peck stars as the new director of a modern psychiatric hospital whose odd behavior raises the suspicions of the brilliant but emotionally frigid Dr. Peterson (Bergman). The lunatics are running the asylum in Alfred Hitchcock's classic 1945 take on romance, murder and psychoanalysis. Dealing directly with Freud's theories of the unconscious proved irresistible to a director already fascinated by guilt and repression, and he runs with it, going so far as to hire Salvador Dali to design the trippy dream sequence that serves as this sexually charged whodunit's centerpiece. Another of Hitch's preoccupations, blonde Ingrid Bergman, stars as an icy psychiatrist who suspects the clinic's tall, dark and phobic new chief (Gregory Peck) isn't who he says.
