Competent but only passably interesting, this first-time feature from actor turned director Gael Morel tells the story of four young outcasts who are bound together after one of them writes a novel based on their lives. Quentin (Pascal Cervo) is an up and coming writer who causes a minor sensation when he publishes "Through the Night," a roman a clef about his friends, a loose-knit group of young, alienated French suburbanites. Chief among them are his girlfriend Julie (Elodie Bouchez), a wealthy student who lives for speed and breaking the rules; his best friend Jimmy (Stephane Rideau), a high-school dropout who loves French hip-hop and dreams of becoming a DJ; and Samir (Meziane Bardadi), a young Algerian immigrant who, still recovering from the shooting death of his lover, falls in love with Quentin. But as Quentin's fame grows his friends begin to suspect his motives, particularly the vulnerable Samir, in whose tragic past Quentin sees fodder for his next book. Morel, who, along with Bouchez and Rideau, first gained attention as actors in Andre Techine's WILD REEDS, has put together a credible character-driven drama with one unfortunate drawback: dull characters. They're meant to be outsiders of some sort (Morel even makes a few passing references to Nicholas Ray and REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE), but they're awfully conventional by anyone's standards. Still, it's well-acted and nicely photographed, and Morel deserves some credit for attempting to open this insular story to such wider-ranging issues as racism and homophobia, even if they only serve to perk up an otherwise humdrum film. leave a comment --Ken Fox
