You asked for it, you got it: the further adventures of Sil the space vixen -- now named Eve (Natasha Henstridge), but the same in all vital respects -- and her quest for the guy who's man enough for her. Oh... you didn't ask for this? Well, it's here anyway, and there are new factors in play. A manned mission to Mars has just returned, and astronauts Patrick Ross (Justin Lazard), Anne Sampas (Myriam Cyr) and Dennis Gamble (Mykelti Williamson) are national heroes. As the high-cheekboned white man in the group -- and the son of a U.S. senator (James Cromwell) to boot -- Ross is the highest profile hero of the lot, so his transformation into a sex maniac on a mission to infect Earth women with the alien DNA he picked up from some Martian sludge is a potential embarrassment of tabloid proportions. Our last, best hope is Eve, clone sister to the bad Sil, who spent most of SPECIES terrorizing randy creeps too dumb to realize that any supermodelesque beauty so eager to sleep with them must not be exactly what she seems. Eve, who has an excellent haircut and an extensive wardrobe of flimsy trifles, spends most of her time lounging around her bedroom in the Biohazard 4 lab, except when her keepers are trying to poison her for the greater good of mankind or she's sent into space heat via telepathic link with Ross. Though there's some trashy fun to be had in the film's first half, this cynical sequel -- which reunites the first film's warring combo of scientist Laura Baker (Marg Helgenberger) and mercenary Press Lennox (Michael Madsen) -- devolves into space junk even faster than the unfortunate Ross. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
