A Very Special Favor

1965, Movie, NR, 105 mins

Hudson is up to his usual antics as the irresisstible bachelor with whom women can't help but fall in love. In the Doris Day spot is Caron, and the matchmaker is played by the charming Boyer as Caron's father, whom she's seeing for the first time in 25 years. Starting out in Paris, Texas oilman Hudson beats Boyer in a court case by resorting to the typical French maneuver (at least in Hudson's eyes) of seducing the lady judge. To make up the damage to Boyer's pride, Hudson offers to do a favor for the elderly man. This comes when Boyer meets Caron and finds his daughter fast becoming a spinster even though engaged to be married to Shawn, a wimp. Boyer's request of Hudson is that he provide her with the romantic experience necessary for Caron to fulfill her womanly role. Rock agrees, and after the nominal amount of game playing on the part of both parties, true love develops, with the next stop the altar. A glossy directorial and scripting effort that makes no pretensions at seriousness. The most impressive performances come from Storch as an uppity cab driver and Talbot as the switchboard operator who nearly faints each time the Rock passes. leave a comment
