Speakeasy

This early talkie intercuts newsreel footage with the story of Paul Martin (Paul Page), a down-and-out college fighter-turned-pro who's being ripped off by his manager (Warren Hymer). Reporter Alice Woods (Lola Lane) falls in love with the gullible slugger and helps him get back in the ring on his own. The familiar climax shows Paul getting the worst of it in the battle for the middleweight championship, his attention riveted to the empty seat where a tardy Alice should be sitting. The fight footage from Madison Square Garden and other New York City views are culled from the vaults of Movietone news.
