Spartan: Review

David Mamet's 2004 political thriller weaves a tangled web of lies, conspiracies and cynical betrayal. Wholesome First Daughter Laura Newton (Kristen Bell) vanishes from her Harvard dorm room and covert military officer Robert Scott (Val Kilmer) is the only one of a small army of government operatives both willing and able to unpick the contradictory clues regarding her fate. Kilmer has trouble with the unique rhythms of Mamet's terse, stylized dialogue, but it's pure pleasure to hear young Derek Luke — who plays Scott's callow partner — embrace its profane poetry as though to the mannerisms born.
