The spirit of Quentin Tarantino hangs over this woozy action picture like the Ghost of Better Movies Past. Bending the truth comes naturally to fast-talking grifter Jack (Matthew Lillard), who offers professional thief Max (Vincent D'Onofrio) and his amoral girlfriend Jamie (Valeria Golino) a chance to break into the big time. Max prefers to stick with a known quantity — he deals in stolen antiques — but Jamie is tired of the penny-ante deals that satisfy Max and his dimwitted associate, Piece (Mark Boone, Jr). So Max and Jamie agree to take part in Jack’s scheme to rip off his former employer, the Bossman (Ed O’ Ross). The Bossman is willing to fork over $1, 000,000 for "The Spanish Judges," a set of dueling pistols that once belonged to Charles IV of Spain. Unfortunately, divesting the Bossman of his cash entails a higher body count than Max and Jamie had anticipated. Max's crew ambushes the Bossman's gang and grabs the loot, but they're too sloppy to pull off a quick, clean getaway. And in any event, Jack hasn't been straight with them: He slyly makes side deals with Max and Jamie to cut the other out. There's also the matter of disposing of Piece and his even dumber girlfriend, Mars Girl (Tamara Mello), which goes very wrong when middleman Piece refuses to die easily. Manipulative Jack bides his time as Max and Jamie turn on each other, but there's still a chance Jack may have met his match in the once-devoted lovers. Cursed with the presence of two of the most mannered actors in contemporary cinema — Lillard and D'Onofrio — Oz Scott's icy, black-comedy caper never attains the air of casual nihilism to which it aspires. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
