Spacecamp: Review

Zach (Tom Skerritt) is a former space jockey who now runs the SpaceCamp where young people learn the fundamentals of operating outer-space hardware. His wife Andie (Kate Capshaw), while waiting for her turn to ride the shuttle, is set to teach a new group of campers: Kathryn (Lea Thompson), a determined girl who wants to be an astronaut; Tish (Kelly Preston), a bejeweled blonde whose airhead demeanor belies her intelligence; Rudy (Larry B. Scott), a would-be scientist; Kevin (Tate Donovan), a bored pretty boy who is more interested in Kathryn than anything else; and Max (Leaf Phoenix), an obnoxious runt who befriends a robot. Trouble begins when the robot decides to fulfill Max's dreams of space travel by arranging for a training shuttle to launch while the campers are aboard. Plagued by cliched characters, ridiculous situations, and a bombastic John williams score, SPACECAMP is just not a very good movie. All the stock shuttle footage or good looking special effects proffered can't disguise its tired treatment of well-worn ideas. SPACECAMP is just a conglomeration of overworked notions, coupled with a wholly unmemorable ensemble. leave a comment
