McLaglen heads an expedition to the South Seas in search of pearls but meets with resistance from a tribal chief who is protecting his people's wealth from the fortune hunters. McLaglen uses Farmer as a ploy to attract the chief, Hall. His plan works and the pair marry. However, the pearl hunt is thwarted when natives lead a bloody siege against the ship in which everyone dies, including Farmer. Hard-hitting action and first-rate photography make this story stand out from routine adventure films. Farmer, who made her screen debut in 1936, began what was expected to be a promising career in films and on stage. Though she was talented and beautiful, her alcoholism forced her into retirement in 1942; she also spent several years in mental institutions during the 1940s. She made one more film in the 1950s and hosted a local television show in Indianapolis. She died in 1970 at the age of 57. A movie about her life, FRANCES, was released in 1982. leave a comment
