When the ranch jointly owned by a trio of Texans--McCrea, Scott, and Kennedy--is torched by Jory and his band of Union partisans at the start of the Civil War, Kennedy signs on with the Confederate army, while McCrea and Scott get tangled up in a gun-running scheme. They meet Smith, a lovely dance-hall queen, and have a number of run-ins with Jory and his henchman (Steele), their competition in the gun-running racket. After much table-smashing, fist-swinging, and gunslinging, McCrea, Scott, and Kennedy are reunited, toppling Jory's band by the finale. Smith, who appears throughout the film in a variety of splendiferous costumes, takes McCrea for a final clinch, while McCrea's former sweetheart, Malone, pairs off with Kennedy. Though bogged down in some unnecessarily complex plot twists, SOUTH OF ST. LOUIS (which, oddly enough, takes place almost exclusively in areas west of St. Louis) provides some solid, hard-hitting action. A fine supporting cast helps pull it all off: Jory and Steele are especially malicious as the bloodthirsty southern guerrillas, and Hale (in one of his final roles) excels as a saloon bartender. leave a comment
