This obscure independent feature wrestles with the problems of child abuse and slum life but ends up exploiting both. Paul (Brendan Ward) and Michelle (Melissa Esposito) are young runaways who escape the cruel attentions of their foster father (Martin Zurla). Paul manages to steal some incriminating kiddie-porn photographs taken of a fellow foster child, who was sexually abused and then murdered. Scared and alone with no place to go, the children find shelter in the basement of a South Bronx apartment building and subsist on garbage can cuisine. Eventually they cross paths with another pair of siblings, Tony (Mario Van Peebles) and Chrissie (Megan Van Peebles), who live nearby. Recently released from a Mexican jail, Tony now sponges off his sister who works as a schoolteacher. Then Tony discovers the photographs. Filmed in 1983 under the title RUNAWAYS, SOUTH BRONX HEROES attempts to deal with some serious social issues, but producer-writer-director William Szarka obscures the message with an action-oriented plot line and some implausible situations. leave a comment
