Down-on-his-luck family man Lovejoy meets up with thief Bridges, and the two stage a series of holdups. They graduate to kidnaping, and Bridges murders the victim, causing a public outcry. Lovejoy decides to implicate Bridges, and both are jailed. A mob of townspeople attacks the jail and kills the two men. The tightly woven screenplay builds to the traumatic conclusion.
