Song Of The West

1930, Movie, NR, 78 mins

Slow moving dramatization of this Oscar Hammerstein II and Laurence Stallings operetta did not make a smooth transition to film. Boles and Segal were victimized by poor sound recording, and there is minimal character development. The operetta, set in the West during the 1849 Gold Rush era, tells of a couple's travels across the U.S. and how they arrive at San Francisco. Set in gambling saloons of the time to give plenty of chances for singing and dancing. Songs include: "The Bride Was Dressed in White," "Hay Straw," "West Wind," "The One Girl" (Vincent Youmans, Oscar Hammerstein II) and "Come Back to Me" (Grant Clarke, Harry Akst).
