1945, Movie, NR, 113 mins

As a fictional tale of a composer who gives his all for his music, this is a fine picture; as a biography, it bears as much resemblance to the truth as NIGHT AND DAY did to the life of Cole Porter. Nonetheless, Cornel Wilde earned an Oscar nomination for his convincing performance as Frederic Chopin, whom screenwriter Sidney Buchman presents as a revolutionary Polish patriot (though, in fact, his support of Polish nationalism was never so zealous). Top-billed Paul Muni, in his only Technicolor film, portrays Chopin's mentor Prof. Joseph Elsner, while Merle Oberon essays the role of novelist George Sand, whom the infatuated Chopin meets in Paris and follows to Majorca, where he becomes consumptive (the real-life relationship between Sand and Chopin was considerably less whirlwind, lasting some 10 years), resulting in his death when he refuses to cancel a concert tour whose proceeds are earmarked for the cause. leave a comment
