Scattered direction doesn't help this empty-headed, but superficially entertaining, musical which is supposedly a biography of Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov, played by Aumont. Aumont meets the sultry De Carlo after a world cruise, and she inspires him to write his great composition "Song of Scheherazade." They fall in love but circumstances keep them apart. When the piece is to be premiered in a ballet at the St. Petersburg Opera House, De Carlo shows up to dance the leading role. The events that transpire in order for De Carlo to get to that point are typical Hollywood contrivances. Arden, only a decade older than De Carlo, is, ridiculously enough, cast as her mother. Musical selections include: "Gypsy Song," "Navy March," "Song of India," "Arabesque," "Hymn to the Sun," "Flight of the Bumble Bee," "Capriccio Espagnole," Op. 35 ("Fandango"), "Song of Scheherazade," and "Dance of the Tumblers" (Nikolai A. Rimsky-Korsakov, some lyrics by Jack Brooks). leave a comment
