It's hard to believe that they missed with this story, a romance filled with some of the greatest music of the ages by Brahms, Liszt, and Schumann. Clara Wieck (Katharine Hepburn), a popular pianist, gives up her career to marry struggling composer Robert Schumann (Paul Henreid); in no time, seven children are born to them, including sisters Julie and Eugenie (Gigi and Janine Perreau, respectively). Enter Johannes Brahms (Robert Walker), a young student of Robert who is much enamored of Clara. When Robert goes mad from the strain of his teaching and composing, is committed to a mental hospital, and dies, Brahms, now a famous composer, proposes to Clara, who turns him down to devote the remainder of her life to her children and to playing her husband's music on the concert stage in an attempt to popularize it. Hepburn studied with piano teacher Laura Dubman, a pupil of Arthur Rubinstein, to create the illusion that she was actually playing. Ironically, it was Rubinstein himself who provided the piano music. All of the acting is first rate, save that of Walker, who is never very convincing as Brahms. Despite its opulent sets and costumes, this good-looking movie leaves much unsaid about these monumental geniuses. The singing was done by the St. Luke's Boys Choir, and William Steinberg conducted MGM's Symphony Orchestra. Musical pieces included Schumann's "Traumerei," Op. 15, No. 7; "Arabeske," Op. 18; and "Dedication," Op. 25, No. 1; plus Liszt's "Mephisto Waltz" and Brahms' "Lullaby" and Rhapsody No. 2 in G Minor. leave a comment
