Brown mugs his way through another comedy. This time he is an offbeat sailor who has an aversion to battle. He somehow gets promoted when he accidentally foils an espionage ring that's after some important Navy documents. He gets himself on a target ship set out to sink and hooks up with the admiral's daughter, who decides to take him home to meet daddy. Much of the film was shot on the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga to add excellent realism. This was lovely actress Muir's first leading role. Known as "The Studio Pest" because of her proclivity for questioning every phase of the movie-making business, she played in many other low-budget films until she was unfairly smeared by the vicious, anonymously published "anti-Communist" pamphlet Red Channels in the early 1950s. Blacklisted by industry executives for years, she became a teacher, her earlier curiosity standing her in good stead. Actress Todd was to die under mysterious circumstances at the age of 30 two years later; this comedy was made during her stormy 20-month marriage to talent agent "Pat" DiCicco. This was a relatively rare comedy appearance for Johnny Mack Brown at the time; after some years playing opposite Greta Garbo and other leading actresses in big-budget films, he had already segued into B westerns. leave a comment
