No, not a tale of a transsexual. This story has to do with antiquated customs and historic male-female roles in a changing world. A name director (Clarence Brown), a fine performance by Hayes, and a cast of great actors can't save this tale about love affairs and protocol in San Francisco's Chinatown. The cast is about as Asian as the Harlem Globetrotters; Novarro can't hide his Latin accent while attempting to add an oriental lilt.
