Errol Flynn had swung across the screen in CAPTAIN BLOOD some 30 years earlier, when Paramount--in the ultimate publicity gimmick--released THE SON OF CAPTAIN BLOOD, starring son Sean Flynn. His son doesn't carry the role off as well as the old man did, however, in this sea story riddled with cliches. Flynn is growing up with mother Todd but wants to sail the seas as his father did; she'd rather he be a doctor. She finally relents, and he joins a ship's company, where he romances passenger Panaro. The ship is taken over by bad pirate Nieto, who happens to be an old enemy of Flynn's father; when Nieto discovers the kid's bloodlines, he has a field day. The young couple is rescued by the old man's cronies, whom Flynn leads on to some action-packed adventures. They all head back to the mainland in time to save everyone from a tidal wave and become heroes. Having gotten the pirate life out of his system, Flynn opts for the simple life of a doctor, with Panaro beside him. Handsome young Flynn (his mother was actress Lili Damita) handles his action scenes with adequate bravura. One critic averred that when he learned to act he might do quite well in pictures. This was his second starring role. The far-ranging young Flynn made a number of others in different parts of the world. His last acting job was in Singapore, before becoming a photographer-correspondent, covering the war in Southeast Asia. He was reported missing and presumed dead in 1970, an apparent victim of the conflict in Cambodia. British actress Todd came out of near retirement for this one. leave a comment
