Hot on the heels of FATAL ATTRACTION came SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME, another film about a happily married man who strays from the marital bed. Mike Keegan (Tom Berenger) is a New York police detective who lives in Queens with his ex-cop wife, Ellie (Lorraine Bracco), and their young son. When wealthy socialite Claire Gregory (Mimi Rogers) witnesses a murder, Keegan is assigned to protect her from the killer. Cold and aloof at first, Claire begins to warm to the handsome, shy, and somewhat dim-witted detective. Although SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME has some major problems with plot plausibility, its emphasis is properly on the people involved in the romantic triangle and not the machinations of a contrived story line. Much of the credit for what works in the film should go to the excellent cast. Berenger is superb, and Rogers proves here that she can handle a lead role with class and aplomb. Bracco, however, steals the picture with a refreshing energy and wit. leave a comment
