The Soldier

1982, Movie, R, 96 mins

A preposterous CIA espionage thriller packed with enough gore to shame most makers of this trash, THE SOLDIER operates on a much-used premise: a couple of Russian terrorists hijack a truck loaded with plutonium from a US highway, then threaten to put the big bang theory into action unless Israeli troops vacate the West Bank of Jordan. Of course the president's hands are tied, and the only answer is the superagent-soldier played by Ken Wahl, a carbon copy of all those other one-man armies. Blood, guts, exploding things, fast cars, tough looks, and slow-motion deaths fill up the screen time that is not cluttered with plot. Just a hair better than James Glickenhaus' earlier fiasco THE EXTERMINATOR. leave a comment
