Carefully crafted by veteran Dutch director Paul Verhoeven (ROBOCOP, THE FOURTH MAN), this WWII drama details the effects of Nazi occupation on a group of Dutch students. Erik (Rutger Hauer) is at first hesitant to join the resistance effort, but after escaping to England he becomes deeply involved, courageously transporting supplies to his comrades in Holland. After the war, he returns home to find that most of his fellow students and resistance fighters have been killed, including onetime student leader Gus (Jeroen Krabbe), while others have come through the war barely affected. An exceptional character study, SOLDIER OF ORANGE is also beautifully photographed by Jan De Bont--the shots of Hauer on the supply boat's windy prow as he travels between Britain and Holland linger long after the film is over. Verhoeven would again work with Krabbe and screenwriter Gerard Soeteman in his haunting THE FOURTH MAN. leave a comment
