Close encounters of a very different kind. This superb science fiction film — recently remade by Steven Soderbergh — was directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, very possibly the finest director to come out of the Soviet Union since the earliest days of its cinematic history. The story concerns a cosmonaut who travels to the distant space station orbiting Solaris. No an ordinary planet, Solaris is also a superintelligent being capable of probing the subconscious.
